A place with nothing on it

My uncle owned a piece of vacant land in Georgia.

Nothing on it. A few trails through the pines, a creek running through the back, and about thirty acres of ground that had been in the family longer than I'd been alive.

Every summer we piled out there. Rode 4-wheelers through the trails. Fished in the afternoon heat. Cooked out while the sun went down and the stars came up. No agenda, no schedule. Just family and fire and nowhere else we were supposed to be.

I was a kid and I genuinely didn't understand it. Why would you own land with nothing on it?

I never questioned what we did when we got there, though.

Those summers built something. The smell of pine smoke. The way time moved differently when you were standing on ground that belonged to your family. You didn't need a reason to be there. You already had one.

This week, America turns 250.

What keeps coming back to me is what independence actually looks like in everyday life. Not the abstract version. A place that belongs to you. Where you can bring the people you love, light a fire, and be still for a while without asking anyone's permission.

That's gotten harder to find. Attention is the most contested resource going. A piece of ground to go quiet on is worth more than it used to be.
